The two-week wait nearly broke me — here's what I wish I'd done differently

I don't have fertility issues myself, but I've sat next to enough friends and patients to know that the two-week wait after IVF transfer is a special kind of hell.

My friend "Sarah" (not her real name) went through three IVF cycles. The first two failed. The third — she was convinced it failed too. She tested at day 5. Negative. Day 6. Negative. Day 7. She threw the test across the bathroom. Day 10, her clinic called: her beta was positive.

She'd already stopped her progesterone. She'd already cried for three days. The emotional whiplash was brutal.

That early negative was almost certainly a false negative — testing too soon. But the damage was done.

Here's what I've learned from watching others survive (and sometimes not survive) the TWW:

Do not test at home before day 10. I know you want to. I know you think it'll give you control. It won't. It'll give you false negatives and false hope. Wait for the blood test.

Distract your brain with something that requires both hands and attention. Pottery. Cooking. A puzzle. Not social media. Not Reddit's infertility forums. Those will make you spiral.

If you must obsess, schedule 15 minutes a day for worry. Set a timer. Write down every fear. Then close the notebook and walk away.

One patient told me she booked a massage for the day before her beta. Not because it would help implantation — it wouldn't — but because she wanted something to look forward to regardless of the result.

That's the secret. The TWW is not a test you can study for. You cannot manifest a positive by willing it. You cannot control the outcome by eating pineapple or avoiding coffee or wearing fuzzy socks. The embryo either implanted or it didn't. Your job is to survive the waiting with your sanity intact.

Sarah's third cycle worked. Her son is now two. She still has the unused pregnancy tests from day 5 and 6. She keeps them in a drawer as a reminder: don't test early.
